In their continuing attempts to continue to sensitize residents about Diabetes, the Grand Bahama Health Services Chronic Disease Committee is holding their first one-day wellness retreat today beginning at 9:00 am.
The event is specially tailored to the needs of people with diabetes and provides an opportunity for them (especially the newly diagnosed) to learn disease management, how to control their blood sugar levels, and how to assist their caregivers in ensuring that there are no complications from the disease process.
The program focuses on practical aspects of living with diabetes, and the keys to healthy living, and provides an opportunity for diabetics to interact and discuss their experiences, successes and challenges with each other.
The one-day session will feature short talks by health professionals, demonstrations in healthy meal planning and preparation and self examination and training for foot care, skin care and the use of diabetic aids.
Medical and Surgical supply companies, and hospital and clinic departmental staff, through the use of educational booths will provide literature and advise throughout the day.
The presenters will encourage questions throughout the sessions to ensure that at the end of the day, everyone is satisfied that they are better equipped to manage their diabetes successfully.
